What is grain milling?

Grain milling is the process of breaking grain into smaller pieces. Grain milling started way back. It started when the American colonists of the 17th century introduced some grains along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to Massachusetts. The y built a grain milling machine there and developed New York as a grain milling marketing center for flour. At that time grain milling involved a lot of human labor, this did not matter whether it was wind powered or hydro powered. Human labor basically was for carrying sacks of grains and flour and truly this was no easy work.

Our forefathers must have given a lot of credit to Oliver Evans for developing the first grain milling machine in which grains and meals moved mechanically. Evans milling machinery was to be the genesis of automation in grain milling industry. We have come a long way from this time when grain was ground using water power and wind. At present there are very many grain milling machines to use. Some of them are hand driven and others are electrically driven.

Grain milling is slowly becoming a thing of the past because many people are getting their own grain milling machines. Well it might be because of the recent price increase in wheat and the uncertainty of the future. Buying and stocking on wheat grains and also purchasing a grain mill gives you the certainty that you will be getting your own whole wheat whenever you need it.

Another good thing with stocking wheat is that the shelf span of any wheat grain is longer than that of flour. The grains can be stored for up to 25 years or more if they are in a sealed bucket. And the grain millers will last like forever. Well many experts are predicting a worldwide or global food shortage in the near future and because of that many people are purchasing machines that they will use for their grain milling and also purchasing a lot of wheat grains. This is not a bad thing since people will have bread on their tables when the groceries are empty.
